The assessment charge

What does the visit fee pay for?

Ask about the assessment itself. Keep the fee and the possible prescription as separate questions.

Look for an assessment, with room to ask.

State boards that oversee doctors form the Federation of State Medical Boards.

In its guidance current as of September 2026, prescribing from a patient’s menu choice alone falls short of the care standard.

Under that guidance, patients need access to the health professional for follow-up questions of their own.

The guidance is for state boards; it is not a single rule binding every state, as of September 2026.

Ask how to speak with the assessing health professional. Find out whether discussing results is part of the visit charge.

Ask what happens when more is needed.

Under medical-board guidance, health professionals must arrange any tests needed for the assessment or refer patients to someone able to provide those tests.

That can include an in-person examination when the medical issue requires it.

Ask who arranges that next step and who charges for it. Does the first fee pay for the next visit? Does it cover only part of that visit, or must you pay the full new fee?

Get the payment terms before the visit.

Is this a charge for a visit or for membership? If it is membership, what care does it include?

What is charged if the appointment is moved or missed? What does the fee cover if no medicine is prescribed?

Request the answers in writing. They are easier to compare when the terms sit beside the amount.
